This piece of legislation was made to bring clarity to the meanings of certain words or phrases that are frequently used in other laws.

In Schedule 1 of the Act there is a list of words and expressions and their definitions in law. These definitions apply unless an alternative definition is given. Two of the definitions which we found quite interesting are:

“Person” – includes a body of persons corporate or unincorporate.

This means that a company is also classed as a “person” despite it not being a human.

“Writing” – includes typing, printing, lithography, photography and other modes of representing or reproducing words in a visible form, and expressions referring to writing are construed accordingly.

This includes, in the modern era, emails, texts, WhatsApps where traditionally, many people did not treat such as “writing”.
