As of 24 June 2015, a key update to honey labelling rules came into effect in England only, under the Honey (England) Regulations 2015. These regulations clarify the definitions of various honey types – vital for producers, retailers, and consumers alike.

Although these categories were already present in the older 2003 regulations, this update brought much needed clarity and legal reinforcement at a time when food origin and authenticity are more important than ever.

The Recognised Honey Types

Under the updated regulations, honey sold in England must be correctly identified as one of the following:

  • Bakers Honey

  • Blossom Honey

  • Nectar Honey

  • Chunk Honey

  • Cut Comb in Honey

  • Comb Honey

  • Drained Honey

  • Extracted Honey

  • Filtered Honey

  • Honeydew Honey

  • Pressed Honey

Why Does It Matter?

These definitions ensure:

  • Transparency for consumers

  • Compliance for businesses

  • Alignment with evolving food standards

If you’re labelling or importing honey in England, it’s essential to align your practices with these clarified definitions to avoid penalties and maintain consumer trust!
